SUMMARY:ZeroPollution4Water Cluster Event - Towards a Water Pollution-Free Europe
DESCRIPTION:ZeroPollution4Water Cluster Event – Towards a Water Pollution-Free Europe: Building Synergies\, Expanding Collaboration\, and Strengthening the Cluster’s Impact\nThe ZeroPollution4Water Cluster (ZP4WC) represents a collective European effort to advance the goal of a pollution-free water future\, in line with the European Green Deal and the EU Zero Pollution Action Plan. Bringing together 15 EU-funded projects\, the Cluster acts as a collaborative platform connecting research\, innovation\, and policy to protect water resources from pollution across all scales. \nBy linking projects focused on pollution prevention\, detection\, monitoring\, treatment\, and governance\, ZP4WC provides a holistic understanding of pollution pathways\, mitigation strategies\, and evidence-based support for EU policymaking. The Cluster’s activities contribute directly to the implementation of the Water Framework Directive and the EU Water Resilience Strategy. \nThe ZP4WC event of 4 December 2025 in Brussels during Water Knowledge Europe 2025 Winter Edition\, marks a key milestone. It will serve to welcome and onboard eight new projects\, revisit the structure and leadership of the Working Groups\, and define a common roadmap for future collaboration. Participants will engage with representatives of the European Commission (REA\, DG RTD\, DG ENV) in strategic discussions on the future of the Cluster\, fostering stronger links between research outcomes and policy needs. \nThe event will reinforce ZP4WC’s strategic position in the European water research landscape\, enhance synergy among projects\, and strengthen governance for the years ahead. The meeting will conclude with breakout sessions to shape Working Group future action plans and a shared vision for a resilient and pollution-free Europe. \nAgenda:\n08:30–09:00 Registration & Welcome coffee \n09:00–09:40 Opening remarks and state of the art of the ZP4WCluster \n09:40–10:20 Presentation and onboarding of the 8 new projects \n10:20–11:20 Panel discussion with European Commission representatives and projects \n11:20–11:50 Poster session and networking coffee \n11:50–13:10 Working Group breakout discussions \n13:10–13:30 Working Group plenary synthesis & closing \n13:30 Networking lunch \nRegister now \n

SUMMARY:Workshop: Connecting policy insights with case studies experiences
DESCRIPTION:EXECUTIVE SUMMARY\nThe ZeroPollution4Water Cluster Workshop\, held on June 17th as part of WIE2024\, served as a pivotal platform for connecting policymakers and project stakeholders in a collaborative dialogue on evidence-based decision-making in EU water management. This event showcased the Inventory of case studies from ZP4Water Cluster sister projects and presented the Cluster’s first Policy Brief on “Preventing groundwater contamination and securing drinking water quality.” \nThe workshop brought together scientists and policymakers to explore the intersection of policy development and project practices\, drawing from the experiences of the ZP4Water Cluster sister projects and their case studies. Discussions centered on critical issues such as climate change impacts on water resources\, the role of innovative technologies including AI in monitoring and treatment\, and the challenges of addressing water pollution\, with a particular focus on disinfection by-products in drinking water. \nKey outcomes of the event included: \n\nIntegration of Research and Policy Development: Emphasis on embedding policy considerations into research projects from inception\, ensuring scientific outcomes are readily applicable to policy needs and align with EU directives.\nEvidence-Based Decision Making and Future Priorities: Demonstration of how data-driven research informs policy decisions\, particularly in groundwater and drinking water management\, with identification of key areas for further investigation such as water system uncertainties and long-term contaminant effects.\nCitizen Engagement and Public Awareness: Importance of involving citizens in scientific processes and policy development\, promoting public awareness in water management\, and encouraging participation in policy processes and monitoring.\nClimate Change and Water Quality Management: In-depth discussions on managing groundwater risks and climate change effects on water quality\, emphasizing the need for adaptive strategies.\nHolistic and Balanced Policy Approach: Recognition of the need for directives that incorporate project knowledge and consider not only technological solutions but also social and economic factors\, reflecting the complexity of water-related challenges.\n\nIn conclusion\, the ZeroPollution4Water Cluster Workshop successfully facilitated knowledge sharing and collaborative dialogue\, reinforcing the commitment to evidence-based policymaking in water management. The event set a foundation for future innovations and policy developments aimed at ensuring both water quality and quantity in a sustainable and resilient manner. \nPresentations can be found here : Presentations

SUMMARY:Public Debate and raising awareness on DBPs: Guidance on measures\, policy and public engagement: Everything you wanted to know about DBPs.
DESCRIPTION:The Public Debate “Guidance on measures\, policy and public engagement: Everything you wanted to know about DBPs” invites citizens to learn and discuss about challenges to drinking water quality. It is a partner event of the EU Green Week and organised by three drinking water projects of the ZeroPollution4Water Cluster: H2OforAll\, intoDBP and SafeCREW. \nAfter a short introduction of the three projects we will open the floor on a public debate “Is it the end of the chlorination age? Or is it the end of chlorination as we know it?” which will be followed by a panel discussion on practical steps for protecting our drinking water (from DBPs). Please have a look into our agenda. \n \nDisinfection by-products (DBPs) are important environmental contaminants that have documented human health issues from many epidemiologic studies. People are exposed to DBPs by drinking chlorinated or brominated water and by breathing in air containing DBPs. The skin also absorbs DBPs during bathing and swimming. After exposure\, DBPs remain in the body for only a short period of time. Citizen may look up water quality data to understand better how water quality affects their health. The main objective of this event is to have an open session to the consumers to inform and increase citizens’ awareness about sources of water pollution within and outside a household (from source to supply). \nDiscuss recommendations on how household activities can be adapted to decrease water pollution and therefore reduce the need for heavy treatment steps afterwards that will lead to DBPs formation. \nThe four ZeroPollution4Water Cluster projetcs aim at securing drinking water quality by protecting water sources against pollution\, providing innovative monitoring treatment solutions\, and ensuring safe distribution. Particularly\, one of the objectives of H2OforAll project is to engage public on the water quality issues and create awareness on how our behaviours affect the entire water chain. The final goal is the development of a user tool to study citizen engagement and measuring water quality awareness. A list of recommendations on preventive measures to protect water quality is one of the expected outcomes. This online event\, open to the general public\, will be the seed for a presential workshop on disinfection by-products\, public engagement and awareness that will be held in Porto (Portugal) in November 2024. \nPlease register here
