On 2 June 2026, the Horizon Europe project MAR2PROTECT will host the high-level policy session “Protecting Groundwater for a Resilient Europe: Policy Dialogue and Innovation at the European Parliament in Brussels.

The event will bring together policymakers, researchers, industry representatives, EU institutions and members of the ZeroPollution4Water Cluster (ZP4W) to discuss how to strengthen groundwater protection across Europe and advance the EU’s zero-pollution ambitions.

Hosted by portuguese MEP Helder Sousa Silva, the session will focus on the growing pressures affecting groundwater resources, including emerging pollutants, agricultural runoff and climate change impacts. Discussions will also explore how scientific research and innovation can support more resilient and preventive water management policies.

During the event, Ana Pereiro, MAR2PROTECT coordinator, will present the main achievements of MAR2PROTECT, highlighting the project’s innovative technologies, demonstration activities and lessons learned across its Living Labs and demo sites.

In addition, IHE Delft team, leading M2P policy actions, will introduce the project’s policy recommendations aimed at strengthening groundwater governance and supporting the implementation of Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) solutions in Europe. MAR2PROTECT, as a founder member of the ZeroPollution4Water Cluster and an active partner of the Policy Working Group, will also introduce the joint policy publications produced within the ZP4W Cluster.

The session will conclude with a high-level roundtable discussion on the future of groundwater protection in Europe, bringing together representatives from the European Parliament, the European Commission, the research community and the ZP4W. The discussion will be moderated by Andrea Rubini, Director of Operations of Water Europe and coordinator of ZP4W, reinforcing the connection between European water policy, research and innovation initiatives aimed at advancing a zero-pollution future.

MAR2PROTECT contributes to collaborative efforts to improve water quality, protect groundwater sources and support the transition towards a water-smart and pollution-free Europe, fully aligned with the objectives of the European Green Deal.
